One night last week my husband came to the Garden with me to have dinner at the cafe's outdoor grill and to take a long walk out to Dixon Prairie before sunset. The prairie is in full bloom with many wildflowers and native plants. It is a peaceful place filled with birds, insects and, in the coming months, butterflies. During the day the open spaces of the prairie can be very hot, with little shade from the sun, but an early evening visit is the perfect time to spend some time exploring the prairie. I found some patches of purple coneflowers and was mesmerized by their beauty in the soft evening light. I just love the way the colors pop in the subdued light. Perfect evening!
