During a crisp but sunny walk at the Garden today, I saw many more Snowdrops covering the hillsides and, despite the cold, some are beginning to open. Winter gives us an opportunity to see the raw beauty of tree trunks and limbs without the cover of leaves. One of my favorite trees is the birch and I am endlessly fascinated with the haunting "eyes" on their beautiful white trunks.
A late afternoon visit to the Arid Greenhouse last week resulted in this photograph of a Natal lily, or Clivia, as it was just beginning to open. I love the way the sun shining through the greenhouse window illuminated just one flower. Today when I returned, the lily was in full bloom.
